Chapter 16
William was tired.
He was physically weary from having to work extra hours doing work he should have handed over to Amanda. He was mentally worn out from trying to avoid her whenever possible. He was emotionally exhausted from dealing with the mess of contradictory emotions he felt whenever he thought about his beautiful young assistant.
Dealing with the drama surrounding Amanda could have been a full-time job on its own, but William still had to deal with the question of how his father's company should be run.
To help ease his own burden, he decided to call upon his closest associates to help answer the question. Charles King, Jackson Smith, and Solomon Judd all made their way to Camelot to help him find the answer. But as soon as the meeting got started it became clear that they wouldn't make things any easier for William.
"The fact of the matter is that we're one of the biggest privately owned corporations in the world," Solomon announced as he pounded the table. "This is a glorious achievement, but it is also a serious liability. There is a reason that most of our competitors have gone public, at a certain size the risks of private ownership outweigh the rewards. We need to get with the times!"
"Have you ever thought that we are where we are because Arthur King set trends instead of following them?" Jackson Smith retorted. "Most companies go public because their only concern is increasing earnings. Meanwhile, King Worldwide has reached its current stature by looking beyond short-term gains and creating sustainable growth. Opening up ownership would almost certainly lead to a temporary growth spurt, but the new investors could end up leading the company in a direction that goes against its founding principles."
William sighed. The meeting had been going on for over an hour and his highest-ranking advisers were starting to sound like broken records. Both were intelligent and persuasive men, but they were also completely opposed to one another. So William turned to his brother in hopes of breaking the stalemate.
"What do you think Charles?" William asked. He tried to maintain a calm demeanor, but inside he was begging his brother to offer a way forward.
"I understand where everyone is coming," Charles began. "But I personally believe that we have to wait until our next family meeting before we can decide on this. If we choose without getting the whole family together to hash it out, then I'm afraid that someone is going to end up hurt. This isn't a decision that can be made unilaterally."
William watched his brother with a stony gaze. Normally he appreciated his brother's measured approach, but now it was rubbing him the wrong way. Who was Charles to suggest that William was incapable of deciding what was right for King Worldwide? If he was so concerned about the company, then why did he turn down the chance to take responsibility for running it?
It seemed to William that Charles and the rest of his brothers wanted the power offered by the family business without any of the responsibility.
